Sea Moss Gel

Essentially, sea moss gel is a seaweed containing vital minerals. For most vegans, adding it up to various types of meals is an easy choice. Sea moss gel is practically tasteless, making it an easy option for vegans to include in their recipes. Apart from it, sea moss gel also proves to be beneficial to your daily diet.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried whole packed sea moss 
  • 1-2 cups spring water

Instructions

  1. Remove sea moss from its package. Don’t worry about the slight smell it will produce, it’s completely normal and a good thing.
  2. Using spring or filtered water, rinse the seaweed thoroughly.
  3. Fill a bowl with water and place your sea moss in and soak for about 4 to 8 hours (do not use tap water).
  4. After 4 to 8 hours of soaking, drain the water from the bowl. The sea moss will lose its color and it will expand up to triple its original size.
  5. Using a high-speed blender, blend your sea moss with fresh spring water for 1-2 minutes until it achieves smoothness.
  6. Transfer it into a glass jar and put a lid on top.
  7. Store in the refrigerator and wait until it forms into a gel
  8. You can now use it for raw vegan desserts, vegan bread, smoothies, and homemade jams.
  9. Its shelf life can reach up to 3-4 weeks in the refrigerator and 2-3 months in the freezer.

Key Reminders

  • Place your moss in an ice cube tray before storing it in the refrigerator or freezer.
  • You have the option to choose how thick your gel will be by simply controlling the amount of water you’ll use. 
  • Raw sea moss has a shelf life of up to a year and beyond if stored in a dark cool place
  • You can either use the blender method or boiling method to form a gel and both ways will produce the same output.
